Lego Mania - From Blocks to Bots

Who doesnt recall the excitement of hours spent as children surrounded by small interconnecting blocks called Lego Bricks building elaborate creations limited only by our imagination.

The story of this famous Danish icon reads like a Hans Christian Andersen fable.

In 1932, master carpenter and joiner Ole Kirk Christiansen, establishes a small business in the village of Billund in Denmark manufacturing stepladders, ironing boards and wooden toys. By 1934 the company adopts the name Lego for their products, formed from the Danish words LEg GOdt(play well). Not too long after the Lego company is the first in Denmark to buy a plastic injection-moulding machine for making toys. In 1948 the Lego Mursten (Brick) is born.

Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen (his surname accidentally misspelled on his birth certificate), the grandson of Ole Kirk is now CEO. The house where his father, Godtfred, grew up is now nestled amid the Lego Groups corporate buildings and the original Legoland theme park (there are now four) sits adjacent.

The basic eight-stud Lego brick hasnt changed, including the recipe for the plastic used. Almost every office and conference room at Lego HQ still contains a bowl of loose Lego bricks so that people can play during meetings.

What makes Lego bricks unique is that they click together and lock so that large structures can be built and still hold together. This design developed over time was so that a child could take a box of Lego bricks and create almost anything without it falling apart or toppling over. Instructions were never included so as to not restrict a childs limitless imagination.

But anyone who hasnt looked at Lego bricks since childhood may be in for a shock. Most modern Lego kits are so elaborate that they now come with a folder of step-by-step construction instructions.

To remain competitive Lego has adapted its history and values around simple child play to the technological world of Game Boy, Xbox and Playstation.

In 1999 in partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd., the company launched Star Wars themed Lego kits which became the biggest sellers in the companys history. Their success inspired Lego Bionicles - a combination of biological and chronicle, the most elaborate having hundreds of pieces, which in turn inspired a movie.

Lego Mindstorms take it all to the next generation. They let you design and program real robots that do what you want them to. With the Robotics Invention System 2.0, the core set of the Lego Mindstorms product range, you can create everything from a light-sensitive intruder alarm to a robotic rover that can follow a trail, move around obstacles, and even duck into dark corners.

Lego bricks continue to inspire not only 6 year olds but the child in us all. The web is awash with fan sites containing elaborate plans, sculptures and even films performed by Lego Brick actors.

Not bad for a product thats sold in pieces, and requires imagination and a childs touch to turn into into something amazing.

Interesting too that close by is the home of another well known product which leaves the factory in pieces requiring assembly IKEA.

computer Drives - How Many Different Kind Are There?

computer drives are much better at reading CD-R than stand alone DVD players. DVD players are more likely to produce glitches in the picture, but on a computer these errors are corrected. There are different removable carriers in which serially and parallel connected computer drives are enclosed. These can not be inserted in the same drive bay of the chassis unless alterations are first made to the chassis or to the portable computer drives. An important detail is to provide the universal receiving frame with the capability of interchangeably receiving different removable carriers within which serial or parallel connected computer drives are interfaced, a serial-to-parallel bridge is mounted on the printed circuit board. The computer drives are also known as disc drives.

computer

Unlike CD-R, CD-RW computer drives can rewrite a CD-RW disc. CD-R and CD-RW drives are primarily only available for computers, so you will have to do all your recording on your computer. In addition to hardware limitations, encoding a video stream to MPEG-2 requires an extremely powerful and expensive computer and the algorithms do notwork in real-time. They have been affixed to carriers that are removably received within a storage enclosure or chassis that is located remotely from a host computer. The removable carrier with its portable computer drive is simply pulled out of the chassis on an as-needed basis. In some cases, the portable computer drive that is enclosed by the removable carrier is connected for serial operation. In other cases, the computer drive is connected for parallel operation.

Such alterations would typically increase the cost and complexity of the computer system and the remote storage. The ability of a single receiving frame to automatically accommodate different removable carriers and both serially and parallel connected computer drives maximizes the flexibility of the computer system and avoids the necessity of having to make alterations to the chassis or the portable computer drives. Another one is a chassis or storage enclosure that is automatically adapted to different computer drive carriers without the inclusion of the mentioned universal receiving frame. In this case, the chassis in the receiving frame are separated from a host computer. The portable computer drives that are enclosed by respective removable carriers and connected there for either serial or parallel operation with other computer drives in the chassis are disc drives.

Connectors

It is to be understood that the backplane connector may have any suitable number of pins and size so as to be adapted to be mated to the oppositely aligned backplane connectors of the removable carriers having both serial and parallel connected computer drives enclosed. An opening is formed through the bottom of extension to permit access to a DC power connector that is connected to circuit board to provide power to the computer drive. By mounting both the interface and the serial-to-parallel bridge integrated circuit chip on printed circuit board at the back of the universal receiving frame. The remote computer drive and its chassis are interfaced with one another at the rear of receiving frame. Moreover, a single universal receiving frame can automatically accommodate different removable carriers, regardless of whether the remote computer drives are connected for serial or parallel operation.

Drives

The choice will be determined by convenience, whether you have space on your desk for a stand-alone and by how much menu authoring you want to be able to do. These computer drives are much less expensive. It is also a good idea to make sure the firmware on your computer drives are updated to the latest version.

NOTE: Desktop/Notebook computer drives are physically smaller and hold less data than full-size hard drives found in desktop computers.

Back to school Safety

As we pack our K-12 kids up and get them ready for another school year, we need to be constantly thinking about their safety. This applies both to their travel to and from school and their safety while on school grounds.

Parent drivers must remain watchful. Children dart unexpectedly into traffic, often from between parked cars. And young pedestrians face a variety of dangers while walking to and from school. Here are a few basic safety tips to follow:

Mind all traffic signals and the crossing guard.
Walk your bike through intersections.
Walk with a buddy.
Wear reflective material. It makes you more visible to street traffic.

The US Dep't. of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests the following safe bicycling practices:

Always wear a helmet.
Always ride on the right side of the road. Never ride against traffic.
Ride single file. When passing other bikers or pedestrians, let them know your position by shouting out something like, "On your left!"
Always check behind you before changing lanes.
Watch out for dangerous things in the roadway. Litter, potholes, gravel and storm drains all can cause you to lose control.
Stop at all stop signs and at all traffic lights. Be extra careful at crossroads.
Always signal before making a left or right turn.
Maintain control of your bike. Don't swerve or make sudden turns. Use caution when riding next to parked cars to avoid injury from someone suddenly opening a car door in front of you.
Listen for cars approaching from the side or behind you.
Don't follow a car too closely. You may be in the blind spot, where the driver cannot see you, and you may be unable to stop if the car comes to a sudden halt.
Know your road signs and obey them.
Always be prepared to stop.
Wear brightly colored clothing.
Don't wear headphones, loose clothing or inappropriate shoes.

Remember these safety tips for entering and exiting the school bus:

Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street.
Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop.
When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten steps away from the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are away from the bus.
Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus.
Be aware of street traffic. Drivers are required to follow the rules of the road concerning school buses, but not all do. Protect yourself and watch out.

You may think that riding in a car is completely safe. But there are still rules you must follow to avoid accidents when riding in a car:

Don't forget that most traffic crashes occur close to home.
Safety belts are the best form of protection in the event of a crash. Everyone needs to be buckled up properly: older kids in seat belts, younger kids in booster seats and toddlers in child safety seats.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has a "Back to school Safety Checklist" with tips on making schools, child care facilities and playgrounds safer. Hidden hazards from the checklist include the following:

Playgrounds -- Check the surfaces around equipment. There should be a 12-inch depth of wood chips, mulch, sand or pea gravel, or there should be mats made of safety-tested rubber or fiber material to prevent head injury when a child falls.

Drawstrings on jackets and sweatshirts -- Remove them from around the neck. They can cause strangulation by catching on things. Cut drawstrings at the waist or bottom of jackets to three inches.

Window blind cords -- If the windows in your home, childcare centers or schools have blinds, cut the loop and attach separate tassels to prevent entanglement.

Recalled Products -- You can get up-to-date recall and product safety information by checking out CPSC's web site on your home or school computer. Sign up to get free recall notices by fax, e-mail or regular mailing by calling CPSC's hotline or writing to CPSC, Washington, D.C. 20207.

The information in this article was compiled from the National Safety Council website at http://www.nsc.org, CPSC's website at http://www.cpsc.gov, and an article on Back to school Safety on the AT&T website at http://www.att.com

Review of Juicers Available in the UK

Many people are aware of the benefits of juicing and take it up with the intention of changing their lifestyle to incorporate this highly beneficial source of fruit and vegetables. However the truth is that few people continue for more than a few weeks. This is mainly due to the fact that prepping can be tiresome, and washing a bore.

Here is a review of some of the best Juicers available in the UK which may help you decide on the best juicer for you and also help you continue to Juice for a healthy life. Most domestic juicers work on two principles: centrifugal and masticating. Centrifugal juicers feed chopped-up fruit and veg through a chute onto a spinning, perforated basket, which grates the fruit. Masticating juicers `chew'. This produces a higher nutritional content. The process incorporates less oxygen resulting in a longer shelf life, although all juices should be drunk soon after they're made.

Magimix Le Duo Plus

This is both a juicer and a citrus press. It is sturdy and, considering it has a 250W commercial-grade motor, surprisingly quiet. The large basket means you can make lots of juice and is extremely easy to clean. Just clean around the basket with the special spatula, a quick rinse and it's done. It comes with an attachment for small and large citrus fruit as well as a coulis maker for soft fruit. There is also a great little recipe book with lots of ideas for drinks and desserts. It is available in satin steel and currently retails for 149.99.

Champion 2000+

If you are a serious juicer and looking for a machine to cope with your demands this is a great masticating machine with a heavy duty motor. Its generous feed tube takes larger pieces which cuts down on the amount of preparation required. Also produces fruit sauces, smoothies, purees and nut butters. It is available in white, grey, cream and black and retails for around 249.

L'Equip 110.5 Mini Pulp Ejector

This award-winning centrifugal juicer produces loads of juice very quickly and quietly. The pulp goes into a separate container making it easy to dispose of, and all the juicing parts go in the dishwasher. It is available in white, grey and black and retails for around 99.

Braun Citromatic MPZ9

If you like fresh orange juice in the morning, this citrus press is very simple to use and the pulp control lets you have your juice exactly how you like it. It is quick and easy to assemble and clean - all the removable parts go in the dishwasher. It is available in white and retails at 19.99.

Easy Ways to Decorate Kid's Room with Child's Bedroom Furniture

As a parent, it is a tough job to decorate your child's bedroom. The first thing that you may wonder about is Where to get good quality child's bedroom furniture? And will my child like those furniture and the whole get up of the room? No matter how challenging the entire concept may be, it is nevertheless an interesting project.

As a start, you can first arrange for the source of your child's bedroom furniture. Although there are plenty of shops of brick and mortar that provide child's bedroom furniture, you can still look for one that is online that is a web store. By doing this, you would not have to sweat out in search of interesting yet good quality furniture.

But hang on! Before you jump in to the next online child's bedroom furniture store and start adding items to your shopping cart, have you given it a thought on what theme would you want for your kid's room? Yes, this is a very critical and one of the primary activities that you should do.

Think about your child's tastes and preferences. Yes, who else but you would know better about what your kid wants and like. Is he crazy about any of the superheroes? Or is he a die hard soccer fan? Is she the little princess of her favourite fairy tale? Or is she as lively as butterflies in the garden? Do you find an ambitious mariner in your child? Or do you have a kid fond of cup cakes?

Whatever your kid likes, you can have the same theme in the bedroom of your child. You can decorate it with Childs furniture that are designed on the same theme. Added to that, you can have matching upholstery and other decorative and useful things in the room that are based on the same themes.

About The Author: Brooke Theresa writes for Kidzdens that offers service to its users to find themed Childs furniture for their kid's room in the UK. She has done her Masters in Business Administration and is currently assisting Kidzdens as a marketing specialist.

The Ultimate Anti-Aging Do-It-Yourself Project for Boomers

I found the following message on a discussion board:

"Those of us between 45 and 65 are not considered seniors - and yet many of us are not comfortable in gyms . . . We are truly a neglected group. Our local park districts have several senior exercise programs, even senior sports leagues. But we are too young to join them. At the same time, most of us simply can't compete with the 20 and 30-somethings that populate most exercise classes.

Gyms need to go out of their way to be more welcoming to people who don't fit the young and skinny mold. A big part of making a commitment to fitness is psychological, and when you feel you don't belong, that the atmosphere systematically excludes and ostracizes you because you're not 22 years old or you don't weigh 102, then it's extremely difficult to keep going back.

. . . we 40 and 50-somethings are not quite ready for senior citizenship. We want something more suited to our age than what's found in the typical gym. But be very, very careful - I am NOT elderly, and I won't be marketed to or treated that way. Can we find a middle ground for those of us of middle age?"

The above tells me the following about the writer:

1. She finds gyms forbidding 2. She understands that part of the commitment to exercise is psychological 3. She knows 40 and 50 somethings are not seniors, however - - 4. She considers 40-50 middle aged 5. She is adamant about not being considered "elderly" 6. She has a group mindset that affects/controls her thinking and behavior

It is the last item on the list above that merits comment first:

Managing the aging process is not a group activity. It's nice to have support, and support helps, but ultimately, it's a do it yourself project.

I would say to the writer of the discussion board message, as well as all 40 and 50 somethings who need group support to exercise (or to perform any activity):

1. Forget about finding acceptance in a gym populated by 20-somethings who don't have an inch of flab on their tight bodies. If you must exercise in a group environment, then toughen up. Forget about the skinny kid on the bicycle next to you. You are not there to compete; your are there to do your own thing. You are there in response to a commitment you made to yourself, not to a group

2. Part of the commitment to exercise is indeed psychological. If you have made the commitment, you will do what you have to do, regardless of what others do, or where or how they do it.

3. The key to not being treated as elderly is to change how you behave and think about yourself. It's important to see yourself as a strong individual who doesn't need the approbation of a group to help you be who you are or want to be.

4. We will always have "marketing to the elderly" because being elderly is a traditional outcome of the aging process, and most people as they age will fit into that category.

5. At 40 or 50, you are NOT middle aged! Remember, in the past century the lifespan has increased by 27 years. Therefore, it no longer makes sense to categorize yourself according to a model that is no longer relevant.

There is a better way to think about the stages of aging, and it is found in Dr. Helen Harkness' groundbreaking book, "Don't Stop the Career Clock". On page 79 she gives her contemporary model for aging:

Young adulthood: 20-40 First midlife: 40-60 Second midlife: 60-80 Young-old: 80-90 Elderly: 90 and above Old-old: 2-3 years to live

Knowing what you know about the lengthening lifespan, isn't the Harkness model a more rational, motivating way to see your stages of aging?

My best advice to 40 and 50 somethings is to be strong, independent and committed to managing your aging process. Don't categorize yourself. Realize that regardless of how much group support you have, no one but you can control how you age. It is indeed the ultimate "do it yourself" project.

A Review of Debt Collection Laws and The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Have you even received a phone call or dunning letter from a creditor or collection agency? Whether you fell behind on your financial obligations or simply forgot to pay a bill one month, you probably have received a friendly reminder about the money you owe.

Most companies in the business of debt collection adhere to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which are the laws that govern their behavior. Among other things, the Act prevents bill collectors from employing abusive tactics to pressure debtors into satisfying an obligation. For example, the Act prevents debt collectors from threatening a debtor with certain criminal prosecution, making excessive phone calls, certain third-party communication, etc. However, it is hard ball tactics which are often a bill collectors best friend and employ the necessary pressure. In addition, the bill collectors are typically paid a commission on the debts the successfully collect. Consequently bill collectors often find themselves walking a fine line between regulatory compliance and illegal debt collection activities.

One debt collection agency which formerly did business in West Virginia jumped way beyond that line with their ultra aggressive debt collection activities and found themselves in federal court litigation. Specifically, the case of West v. Costen provided a prime example of how not to collect a debt. The case involves a class action lawsuit against named defendant William C. Costen. One of the plaintiffs successfully proved that the defendant unlawfully contacted third parties about a debt. The FDCPA prohibits certain third-party contact which is designed to protect the debtors reputation and prevent the debt from losing a job. This can be most troublesome for a debtor if a bill collector continually contacts the debtors employer.

A debt collector may legally contact an employer but certain limitations apply and they must cease any communication once the debtor advises them to stop contacting him or her in that manner. In the West lawsuit, one plaintiff successfully proved that a bill collector illegally communicated with his teenage daughter and another proved that the defendant unlawfully communicated with his grandparents and uncle.

In addition to the above, the plaintiffs alleged more humiliating types of conduct. Specifically that the defendants violated section 1692e(4-5) of the act which prevents debt collectors from using any false, deceptive, or misleading representation or means in connection with the collection of any debt and the representation or implication that nonpayment of any debt will result in the arrest or imprisonment of any person.

Specifically, the plaintiff alleged to have received a payment demand notice which indicated that a criminal warrant was pending. In addition, that the bill collector told the plaintiff that she would have a warrant issued for her arrest unless she paid her debt. The court failed to grant summary judgment on those issues since the defendants were collecting dishonored checks and it was possible to pursue criminal prosecution for such activity.

The case also includes a detailed discussion of other provisions of the FDCPA including the validation of debts, collection of service charges, and piercing the corporate veil. In summary, if you have been contacted by a bill collector and feel that they may have stepped over the line, you may want to reference the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and also the case of West versus Costen.
